Students read about Emily Murphy, the "Famous 5", and their fight to have women declared as "persons" under Canadian/British law, in 1929. (see linked handout)
Vocabulary: Students to write definitions for the vocabulary in BOLD in the reading. As we read through and discussed the article, we also talked about what these words meant, for better understanding. Can use a paper dictionary, translator, or online dictionary (www.learnersdictionary.com is a good one) to locate definitions. Choose the definition that BEST FITS how the word is used in the sentence (if there is more than one definition, look at how the word is used, and write only the definition that matches). Questions: 10 Questions based on the information in the reading. Write answers in full sentences. (We did the first one together.) Students given time in class to work on completing questions. You may use a dictionary/translator for individual words but NOT for sections of text - that is not the way to learn and understand English. This was chosen to be an appropriate reading level for Dev. 2 students.
