Hi everyone! For those of you asking about resources to continue practicing your English/grammar over the next few months until September rolls around, here are a few sites to get you started: https://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/grammar-exercises.html https://www.englishgrammar.org/exercises/ https://www.fluentu.com/blog/english/english-grammar-exercises-online/ https://www.english-grammar.at/ You can also just do a Google search with terms like "Grammar practice" and get a bajillion options; check out a few and see what works best for you. The English Grammar textbook we've been working from is this one, except it's now on the 5th edition and I have the 4th edition: https://www.pearsonerpi.com/en/elt/digital/understanding-and-using-english-grammar-myenglishlab-access-card-427542 And this is the vocab book I use, because I like how it gives a dozen words per lesson and they're actually USEFUL words (some vocabulary texts are very out-there with their word choices, like you're studying for a spelling bee championship and not real-life-use): Looking for short stories to read online? Try these links:
NOTE: if you're coming back to EF 6/7 we might use some of these next year, and I don't know what will be used in English Composition 11, so you might see some repeat. Stories tend to have a range from about Gr. 9-11 depending on the teacher's view of them and what assignments are going to be done, as well as how advanced the class's vocabulary and comprehension is. For example, I use "Lamb to the Slaughter" with my Gr. 9s, but it's in one of these links for Gr. 11, and I used to read "Mirror Image" with Communications 11/12 classes which is the same-ish level as one teacher has it linked here. We read "Gift of the Magi" in Term 2 this year, and I've taught "The Cask of Amontillado" in previous years in EF 7. https://lwoodliffe.com/11-short-stories https://americanliterature.com/high-school-short-stories https://sites.google.com/site/mrshansonskelvinclassroom/Home/grade-11-lit-0809/short-story-unit https://owlcation.com/academia/Very-Short-Stories-For-High-School That should keep you busy! :) Take care, and have a GREAT summer, everyone! See you in September!!

We'll continue with the Grammar (Ch. 6 - Subject/Verb Agreement).
Look at last part of Oxymoron and Paradox (that we didn't get to last class). Go over Vocab #41 and blanks-fill. Optional Story (linked button below - click on button to open in a new tab): "The Fall of a City" by Alden Nowlen Note - These are not my questions at the end of the story; it's just a good Gr. 10-level story and this is an available digital format. Feel free to look at the questions; however, the formatting/numbering is weird (goes 1-10 and then 3-8 + an indented 9 at the end??). We won't go over the answers together since it's not a mandatory assignment, but I know some of you were wanting the extra reading practice. :) Optional Short Story: "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin (linked button below) Kimberley Hlina is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. Complete assigned Grammar exercises (Ch. 6 Subject Verb Agreement). See below: 2 OPTIONAL practice sheets for "Confusing Words" - words that are spelled and/or sound similar but have different meanings, and so can be easily confused in their usage. (The 3rd page of this document has the answers on it, so you can self-check when you're finished.) Oxymoron and Paradox (Figuratively Speaking book handout) - do your best to complete the practice work, as discussed last night. Explaining the oxymorons and paradoxes on the 2nd page will likely be the easier part; creating new/unique ones (especially paradoxes) that make sense may be more challenging (last page). Have re-linked this below. Additional Oxymoron and Paradox Notes and Examples; we'll talk about this if there's time on Wednesday. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R_UiF-yaCKmAELMsV9_YR0Iyy6z2HOjUfIcyYuaZScQ/edit?usp=sharing
We'll take a look at these vocab words - the last set for the term - in class on Monday, and also catch up on some of the other stuff we didn't get to last week. - Going over some of the grammar (Ch. 6 exercises - Subject/Verb Agreement) and doing some talking/listening. - The Simile/Metaphor practice work in Google Doc (highlight 2 things being compared for similes; write what's being compared for metaphors) - Looking at Oxymoron and Paradox figurative language.
Make sure to review Vocab Lesson #40 words - Assessment on Wednesday. *If you haven't handed in your 12 sentences via email, please do so! Similes and Metaphors Practice: Highlight the 2 things being compared in the simile sentences. Write the 2 things being compared in the metaphor sentences. Consider WHY a writer might choose these 2 things to compare - we'll discuss it. (Google doc, but also shared as a pdf file below; whichever is easier for you to access and work with) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SbTAMucDmpXitJt-Pgpkj4df-ZMOv2Ep-Z02MbJGXCE/edit?usp=sharing Grammar Ex. #4 and #8 if you haven't already done them. (was assigned for Monday but didn't have time to go over) Figuratively Speaking: Oxymoron and Paradox (see pdf link below) We'll look at these next; you don't have to do anything with this for Wednesday, just make sure if we have time to get to it and start talking about it, you've got it downloaded or printed out, ready to go.
