Review Quote Integration Notes from last day (overhead). Sample 5-Paragraph Essay (read through main points together - linked below) Transitions: Overhead with practice within a paragraph. Lists/categories on back of Organizing Ideas handout from 2 classes ago. (linked below) Start working on Rough Draft - body paragraphs only, with integrated quotes, using some transitions. (30+ minutes of class time to work and ask questions ENG9E, 15+ minutes to work ENG9A). Rough draft body paragraphs due for next day (ENG9E - Friday; ENG9A - Tuesday). Each of your body paragraphs should be at least 6 sentences long, and include 2 integrated quotes from the novel. Examples of integrated quotes: 1. Start with your own words and finish with author's words/quote material: Miig wouldn't dare shoot at the men because "RiRi was at risk" (133). 2. Start with the author's words/quote material and finish with your own words: "RiRi was at risk", so instead of shooting they tried to chase her captors (133). 3. Start AND end with your own words, and use the author's words/quote material in the middle (quote sandwich): Frenchie panicked when he saw RiRi in Lincoln's "meaty grasp...her arm twisted at a sick angle" and wondered how they were going to be able to save her (132).
Integrating Quotes - handout & practice each of the 3 ways of incorporating quotes (using sentences from the novel, written on board).
1. Now it's your turn: Choose one of the above ways to incorporate quotes for each of the following passages from The Marrow Thieves. Write a sentence that incorporates part of the author's words/quote material; use each method once and each passage once. 1. I couldn't yell, had no voice to make noise with. (39) 2. Suddenly, I realized that there was worse than running, worse than the schools. There was loss. (110) 3. Instead of a captor, he became her anchor, dragging her all the way to the bottom. (139) Next Steps: Use the rest of the class time (and for homework!) to find some quotes that you think will work well in your body paragraphs (3 relationships in the book) and consider how you might incorporate them into your sentences. Time Frame: Next classes x 3 = working on rough draft, then edits, then (typed, in-class) good copies! Block A - DYAC Survey (10 minutes) Essay Introduction - Format (notes, attached) and Outline (handout, linked below) Time to work on Outline - What 3 relationships are you writing about, and in which order? What points/details are you going to write about, for each relationship? Start thinking about what quotes from the novel you can use to support your ideas and points. HW - if not completed in-class, finish planning your body paragraphs (3 relationships + details for each one). You should have 2-3 details about each relationship, and be able to explain/support them with examples, proof, evidence, quote from the novel. Don't worry about completing the "Conclusion" section of the handout, yet.
