Wednesday: LOTS of Hot Topics
- Transit/Unions: What are some of the things we have today in many job-sites because of unions' fights, historically? (8 hour workdays/40 hour work weeks, BREAKS [paid and unpaid], maternity/parental leave, health benefits, sick leave, retirement/pensions, child labour laws, safety regulations, minimum wage, paid vacation time, holiday pay, sexual harassment laws/protections, and more!) - Menstrual Topics/Rights - Should there be "leave" time provided for people when they are menstruating and unwell? (equal/equitable link - doctor's note? anyone can take the time? would it be abused?) What happens when people who work together all menstruate at/around the same time and take the time off? Taxes on menstrual products (not anymore in Canada, as of 2015, but definitely still a lot of places). Considered "a luxury" rather than "a necessity" (whaaaat?!). Packaging disputes (Venus or "women's" symbol on some packaging removed - some people flipped their lids about it). Sanitary or menstrual products vs "feminine products" - takes into account not all people who menstruate identify as "women" or "feminine". - Teacher Bias (story from Italy via social media, re: a teacher saying if students are seen attending climate action/strike they won't pass her course) - Should a teacher's personal/political beliefs affect how well a student can do in their class? (consensus - absolutely not, and that's terrible!) Start reviewing Equity/Equality Questions - last day's article.
