Banned Books Week: And Tango Makes Three storybook online.
To watch/listen to the book: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyPjUa908hM This book has been on the banned list at least 8 times, since it was first published in 2005 (as of 2018 data). A true story about 2 male penguins - Roy and Silo - in the Central Park Zoo who became close (a couple, really), and ended up being given an egg to hatch (another penguin couple had a "spare") after they built a nest and tried to hatch an egg-shaped rock. Soon, baby Tango was born, and she was the first ever penguin chick in the Central Park Zoo with 2 Daddies, who raised her, cared for her, and did everything the other parents did for their young. Complaints from people who wanted it banned included: “unsuitable for young children”, "anti-family", "homosexual overtones", "alternative or non-traditional families", and even one that nobody (even journalists reporting on it) seems to really understand, "anti-ethnic". The book went on to "[garner] critical acclaim, including starred reviews from School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, and Booklist, and several awards, such as recognition as an ALA Notable Children’s Book, a Nick Jr. Family Magazine Best Book of the Year, and being listed as a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award." (2nd letter in example does it differently) In Block Format, you do not indent; skip a line before starting the next paragraph. (again, look at 2nd example - our writer did not skip lines, and her letter looks more "squished" than the first example) - Remember to skip a line between each section; having "white space" in a letter make it easier to read. - Punctuation: Use a colon (:) after your Salutation, and a comma (,) after your Closing. (Note: neither of the sample letters did this, but it's considered traditional punctuation format in a formal letter.) - Our Soldier Letter follows a modified format, due to how much information we have about the recipient (very little) and confidentiality (we are not having students include some of the information that they would write on a cover letter for a job, or an application for a scholarship, for example!) Our Soldier Letter Modified Format: (with lines skipped between sections and paragraphs) Date Greeting: Body Closing, Signature Printed Name, SDSS, Delta, BC https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-djtoPj81N1Y_CrQ-6tgBrTqMpwfiQcyxM51XbTYp1Y/edit?usp=sharing EDITED, Rough Drafts are Due on MONDAY. Many students who had rough drafts completed for Thursday had enough time to swap and edit their letters during class time. For you - no homework! If you did not have a draft here and/or completed, you must finish and have your letter edited (doesn't need to be by a classmate - but I want to see edits/notes on the page, in a different colour, by someone else) for Monday's class. You will be given a special (well, it's not THAT special) piece of paper on which to write your Good Copy, next day. Good copies must be hand-written (unless IEP-specified) and in blue or black pen (not pencil). Have a great weekend!

Independent Reading Idioms List I https://docs.google.com/document/d/1enrkLRXi2fXA0PCMpqtaBm4CSdmOUpPzo-6Q2zEKwyM/edit?usp=sharing (fill in the blanks) Discussed list of 10 idioms; time in class to fill idioms into blanks. Idioms List #1
Brainstorm: What are some reasons that a person or group might want to ban or censor a book? Are these good reasons? Why or why not? Should anyone have the power to decide what someone else is allowed to read? Operation Canadian Soldier Letter: Block F - make sure you have Rough Draft for Thursday (ran out of time in class) Block G - peer edit (start in class, finish for Thursday)
Silent Reading Go over answers for Assessment together (last day had chance to make corrections and/or finish up incomplete questions, so this is a way to check that work) Operation Canadian Soldier - introduction, rough draft due Tuesday (see link below for criteria + sample letter)
Phones "parked" today.
In-class assessment (will be marked but not "for marks"). We'll go over it together next week. Please bring a BOOK (or alternate reading) for Independent Reading, next week! Course Outline given and discussed. Please remember: Reuseable snack containers and drink bottles/cups/mugs only in this classroom - no single-use plastics or individually-wrapped snacks. We're trying to be as enviro-conscious as possible! Snacks should be nut-free, please, due to some students having severe allergies. Library Visit (please have a book ready for Silent Reading starting next week!) Please complete Student Info Survey (linked on Home Page of this website). Spirit Day is Wednesday, so we don't have class. Friday we'll have an in-class assessment; please bring supplies to write, write-on, and erase. (pens, pencils, paper, eraser/white-out, binder)
Please make sure you have writing supplies for English 8 - Binder (or divider within Day's binder), LOTS of lined paper, pencils, pens (blue or black only for handing in work), pencils, erasers, White-Out if you want it. You may need other supplies for certain days or projects - I will let you know in advance!
