Green Bottle Street Maps returned; grades on Connect. Several without names now claimed. A few students did not hand in assignment - please double-check your binders and at home! Protagonist Paragraphs collected; if yours isn't done and handed in, please make sure it's finished for next day. See last post for details/criteria. Zombie Story Mad Libs parts of speech practice. Story attached, as some students wanted to fill in the whole story with their words. We went through it once in class with some suggested words from all students. For Thursday: Read to p. 47 (assigned last day) and catch up on Point-Form-Plot. Complete the 5 questions assigned last week, for entries #1-3, as we'll discuss them next day. NO NEW HOMEWORK OR READING - Happy Halloween!

Review events in "Because Geometry", Q & A
Protagonist Paragraph: Assume that I haven't read the book. Introduce me to the main character. (30 minutes of class time given) - must be about Junior (the protagonist) - no info past p. 31 (assigned reading for today) - must include both physical and personality characteristics - introductory sentence - name of character, name of author, title of book - body sentences x 5-6 (specific details about character) - concluding sentence - a wrap-it-up, generalized statement about Junior * Double-spaced * Blue or Black Pen (ink, not pencil) ## No quotes necessary, BUT if you're using a phrase longer than 2-words-long that comes directly from the book, it should be cited. Put quotation marks around the phrase, and in parentheses write the page number. Example: Junior knew that Oscar was really sick when he saw the dog's "red, watery, snotty eyes" (9). For Tuesday: Read the next 2 diary entries (to p. 47) and work on Point Form Plot notes up to that point in the novel. Point form plot (PFP) will be checked for completion 3 times during the novel study. Students will be reminded at least one class before any PFP checks are to be done. Review of events in 2nd and 3rd diary entries - should have point-form-plot done (continue working on it, as we read through the novel; 2-5 notes per entry)
Questions: 30+ minutes in class to work on. Can work with partner or in table-groups; everyone must have their own copy. Complete for homework. READ: "Geometry Is Not a Country" for Friday. Black-Eye-of-the-Month Club 1. Junior uses humour a lot in his “absolutely true diary”, and a lot of it is aimed at making fun of himself. Find 3 examples of this in the first diary entry, and write them down. For each one, what actual information is he giving the reader about himself? What reasons might he have for using humour in this way? (think of at least 2 reasons, and write them down) 2. Why does Junior draw? Write 4 short quotes from the book that show his reasons. Why Chicken Means So Much To Me 1. Who was Oscar? What happened to/with Oscar, in this section of the book? How do you think Junior’s parents actually felt about this situation? Explain why you think they’d feel this way. 2. How does Junior imagine his parents lives would be, if they hadn’t grown up poor? Revenge Is My Middle Name 1. What do we learn about Rowdy, in this section of the book? In short-form, write down some of his characteristics (physical and personality/character). Is Rowdy a believable character? Why or why not? Do you like to write?
Are you passionate about the environment, and sustainable living/conservation of resources? This essay competition might be for you! "The Trust for Sustainable Living is pleased to invite schoolchildren around the world to share their unique perspectives on the role young people can play in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal #15 – to conserve and sustainably manage life on land." 20 December 2018Deadline for submission of essays (and Schools Sustainability Challenge videos). https://trustforsustainableliving.org/take-part/international-schools-essay-competition-and-debate We started with a visit to the library to learn about creating an account (building on downloading the Destiny Discover app, last library visit). Most students got that done while we were there.
Ms. Doyle also showed us how to access ebooks on the school library system, and students had a chance to renew and/or check out a new book. SDSS is doing a friendly reading competition with DSS - if you go to the school library site, one of the banners is "Rival Reads" and shows the 5 books that are included. If you have already read any of the books, see Mrs. Doyle for a sticker to put on the chart. Books can be signed out from the library (if any left), downloaded, or checked out from public library. Doesn't have to be through SDSS library. :) The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Point-Form Plot For each section of the novel (each diary entry), you'll be writing an average of 3-5 jot-notes to summarize what happened in that part. Longer entries may need 5-6, shorter may only need 3. Be sure to include characters (anyone new? any big changes?) and setting (whenever it is new or changes). We brainstormed and wrote notes (on the board) together for the first entry (see below). Students worked together to create point-form plot notes for the next entry, which was to be read for today (assigned Tuesday for homework). For Wednesday's class, please read the next entry (to page 24) and do point-form plot notes. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian - Point-Form Plot 1. The Black-Eye-of-the-Month Club - Junior: 14 years old, lives on Spokane Indian Reserve - born with too much cerebral spinal fluid in his skull; led to a lot of health issues: seizures, brain damage, and physical + intellectual challenges - bullied and beaten-up regularly - survival skills: stay inside and DRAW (Junior sees drawing as the universal language, and his way out of the reserve) 2. Why Chicken Means So Much To Me - - - - 3. Revenge Is My Middle Name - - - Some students completed maps during class today, and a few stayed during Flex and finished them up during that time. For you, there's no homework. :)
All additional students will need to finish their maps FOR HOMEWORK (and/or in support blocks, if they have them between now and next class). There will be no more class time to work on maps, and we'll be moving on to the next unit of study on Tuesday. Have a great weekend! ~Ms. Hlina Rough drafts checked after Silent Reading. Partial marks for incomplete-but-started drafts; see Connect for marks.
Rest of class given to work on good copy of map (about 45 minutes) on larger-sized paper provided in class today. EDIT: More time is needed; even focused students are maybe half-way finished, so students will have some time on Friday to complete their maps. Students are also welcome to come Thursday or Friday during Flex to work on their maps. Maps should be finished by the end of Friday's class or Friday Flex - enough in-class time will have been allotted for the amount of work needed for the average student to complete the assignment, and there are 2 possible Flex-times available, and some work should be done at home. Students with support blocks may want to consider using a bit of time to review criteria with their teachers, to ensure they're on track when not working in English class or in Flex with me. Maps will be marked based on criteria listed and reviewed last day. Criteria is also attached to the previous blog-post in this thread. Students had time in class to get started on planning a rough draft of a mapping project, creating their version of Green Bottle Street (the "street that got mislaid" in the story we just read). Please have rough draft/plan ready for Wednesday's class (October 10), and bring pencil crayons and other supplies to work on a good copy. Class time for rough --> good given next day only. Your rough draft should have some details, and demonstrate a solid plan, but does NOT need to be in colour, the whole road doesn't need to be cobble-stoned, etc. However, all elements should be roughed-in before starting your good copy, and a Homework Check mark will be assigned for the rough copy at the start of Wednesday's class. I do have some pencil crayons and a couple of sharpeners, but not enough for all students to freely use all the colours they may want, so having some of your own supplies is recommended. GOOD COPY of the map will be due next Friday (October 12). No class time to complete on Friday - only Wednesday's class. Students were to hand in their "The Street That Got Mislaid" worksheet - vocab and questions - by the end of today's class (Friday). Please plan to see me for Flex on Tuesday if you were not able to do this.
Please finish reading the story (time given in class to read) and complete Part A of handout - 5 vocabulary words, with contextual definitions (if more than one definition in dictionary, find the one that fits the context of the story, and write that one only) and original sentences. You do NOT have to do anything with Part B - that's for Wednesday. Forgot the story? You can reference it here: http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/mislaid.html
