Independent Reading Hand in completed maps - if not done, try to bring at start of lunch tomorrow (Tuesday). I will NOT be here during Flex, as I'll be in the theatre for an assembly with Gr. 9 students. "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe Pre-Reading - scary stories (what do they have in common? list 5 things...) Agree/Disagree with statements x 6? (discuss as group; share ideas) Read story aloud - students taking turns reading aloud (can pass, but encouraged to try). Story lined below. Literary Terms NOTES: (you'll need to know these terms to answer questions about the story, next day) Alliteration: repetition of letter/sound at the start of words in a line of poetry or sentence (usually we look for 3+ repetitions or words side-by-side) Sara smelled the slimy snailshell. (repeated "s" with same-sound) Simile: comparing 2 unlike things, using "like" or "as". Her eyes sparkled like emeralds. (comparing eyes and emeralds, both are sparkling, both are green) Personification: giving human characteristics to non-living things (can be plant-living, just not breathing-living). The fire devoured the frightened trees. (forest fire = fire is "eating" and trees are "scared") Assonance: repetition of vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u - can be hard or soft sounds), within words in a sentence or line of poetry. Does NOT have to be the same spelling (unlike alliteration). Lou drank booze with her crew. (oo) Priscilla sips a pink drink in mid-May. (soft i) Who grabbed and stabbed Flat Stanley? (soft a)

Please have your GOOD COPY map completed, and the criteria sheet that was given (with your rough draft on the back) ready for the START of class on Monday. I will be collecting these, and we will be moving on to start a new unit. If you ended up doing a rough draft on a different piece of paper, bring that to staple to the criteria sheet + map.
Have a GREAT long weekend! Full class period (minus 10 minute silent reading) to work on Good Copy of Green Bottle Street map assignment. Checked for completed rough draft; larger paper given out for Good Copy.
You'll have about 1/2-of-Wednesday's-class to work on good copy. Please budget your homework/classwork time accordingly to be finished by the end of the block on Wednesday. See previous post for Criteria Sheet, if needed. "The Street That Got Mislaid" mapping assignment - working on rough drafts today (Thursday), due Monday. Sketch rough draft on back of criteria sheet/rubric (see file linked below). Please bring colouring supplies (pencil crayons, markers, whatever) for Monday's class so you have them to work on your good copy poster. I have some, but not enough to supply the class with lots of colours. Bigger paper will be supplied, and you'll have the full class period to work on your poster/map of Green Bottle Street. Good copy due WEDNESDAY.
Vocabulary and Questions - Sorry these didn't save/upload properly last day!! Please finish front-and-back for THURSDAY'S class. Tuesday (today) - in the library with Ms. Doyle to set up library accounts, learn how to renew and find books online (including e-books you can read on your device via your account), and Book Review practice.
Independent Reading - students should be committing to a book at this point, rather than taking a different one from the shelf each day and reading a couple of pages. Elements of a Story - NOTES (last day and today) See link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pVxu4qxBi6kTs2kw9jUEBnZ0Ah8IOtYQ39qun52FYbw/edit?usp=sharing Students wrote notes as we went through the lesson. If you were away today or last day, please make sure you have a completed set of hand-written notes. Writing something down helps to process and remember! Story Arc - draw and diagram "The Street That Got Mislaid" short story: handed out and first 3 pages read aloud. Read the rest for next class. (see below to download) NOTE: If you are away Thursday on the Socials Field Trip - work will be posted here and it is expected that you complete it for the following class (Tuesday after Thanksgiving). Students are welcome to come Friday during Flex with any questions, or to work on it.
Reading/Colouring (if homework not completed)
Putting our "Stained Glass" panels into windows, up in the halls (checked for completion mark). Idioms assignment. Finish back of page for Friday. Good copy of Operation Canadian Soldier assigned. Modified Formal Letter Format: remember to put spaces between each section of your letter, and pay attention to the punctuation after salutation and closing.
