These Indigenous Alaskan women traveled to Washington DC "to meet with lawmakers in an attempt to persuade them to protect the Tongass National Forest. As part of a delegation organized by Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), a nonprofit group that engages women worldwide in environmental advocacy, they walked the halls of Congress wearing formal Tlingit regalia instead of pantsuits and plain dresses. “We stood out that way,” explains Culp, who is part of the Tlingit people. “We couldn’t be ignored.” Our environment *needs* people like these strong women. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/09/trump-wants-to-log-an-enormous-alaska-forest-these-native-women-traveled-3000-miles-to-stop-it/?fbclid=IwAR1r1XHvMhbGItIGYMMR4Lr2WcX-5rZaOagRVUNvRZ1Hc21qVqv_vA2wL_M

No more stolen sisters!" In June, the MMIWG Report was released. The BCTF has created a resource - Their Voices Will Guide Us - for teachers who wish to learn more and be better allies for Indigenous students and families. http://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/NIMMIWG-THEIR-VOICES-WILL-GUIDE-US.pdf Good afternoon, students and families! I look forward to working with you this year, in my continued role as the Indigenous Student Success Advocate at SDSS.
In the next couple of weeks, I'll be looking to introduce myself face-to-face with incoming Gr. 8 students and other new students, and checking in with parents/guardians/adults-at-home to make sure I have up-to-date contact information so that I am able to sent out updates that may be interesting to you and your families. My ISSA block this year is on Day 1, in C. My prep is in D, so I am able to be a bit flexible with meetings in the afternoon on Day 1. I also hope to reserve ONE Flex block every 2 weeks for Indigenous students (and their friends), so that if you have any questions or concerns, that's another way to chat with me without having to leave any of your other classes (which I know is difficult - I don't like interrupting you any more than I have to, either). In early-October, we'll do a Meet and Greet - all Indigenous students (can bring a friend) will be invited to a designated Flex block for snacks, an introduction, and so that I can hear what's important to YOU this school year. I hope that you all had a chance to relax and restore a bit this summer, and am honoured to work with you again this year. Please contact me at [email protected] or via the "Contact" link on this page. You can also leave a message at the school - (604) 943-7407 (ext. 2526)- and I will return your call as soon as I am able. Sincerely, ~Ms. Kimberley Hlina |
New Position:This is a new position to SDSS and most other secondary schools in our district. As such, it's going to be a work in progress, and there will be a lot of learning for me, too! Archives
