Feb 14th at Lunchtime in the conference room: University of Victoria presentation (only for Grade 12) Verna J. Kirkness Education Foundation OPPORTUNITY - Interested in Math, Science, or Engineering?2/13/2019 "Increasing the number of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students graduating from science and engineering programs in Canada.”
A wonderful scholarship opportunity for grade 11 students interested in math, science and engineering. Students can choose to spend a week this summer at one of three universities: UVIC, UBC or KPU interacting with scientists in their research laboratories. A unique aspect of the Kirkness Program is that we do not ask for the student’s grades. Selection is based on the student’s essay which is their opportunity to talk about what they would like to do after completing grade 12 and how the Kirkness Program would help them make a choice regarding post secondary studies. The application also includes a reference letter from a teacher or counsellor who indicates how the Kirkness Program would be of benefit to the student. EDIT - DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MARCH 1st!! Please see the following link for more information: http://www.vernajkirkness.org Students can use this link to apply: http://www.vernajkirkness.org/application-form/ or click the button below - should take you to this link, but in a new tab: FitNation - Spring 2019 Training for Future Leaders Want to help increase physical activity in your community? Looking ahead to "What's next"?? MANY BC post-secondary institutions have Indigenous Studies departments and/or courses, offer a variety of supports to Indigenous students, and are actively encouraging Indigenous students to apply to ALL programs. See below for PDF SCANS of some of the information I've received from different schools. I've got the originals in my room, and you're more than welcome to come check them out - I haven't scanned all pages of all materials, so there's more to know! If you're interested in finding out more, let me know; I'll do whatever I can to get you the most accurate, up-to-date information (courses, contact info, application deadlines, scholarship lists, etc.) so you know what's available. You can also meet with Ms. Fernandez about these schools and programs, as she's the #1 in-the-know person about post-secondary at SDSS. She works Monday-Thursday, and her office is in the counselling area.

New Position:This is a new position to SDSS and most other secondary schools in our district. As such, it's going to be a work in progress, and there will be a lot of learning for me, too! Archives
