Full-Day event, November 13, 2019. Limited number of participants - still a few spots available for Delta youth. FREE. LUNCH PROVIDED. Earn 6 WORK EXPERIENCE/VOLUNTEER HOURS toward Grad Requirements. EXCLUSIVE Snotty Nose Rez Kids CONCERT. A letter was sent home to parents/guardians/families from the district, but I am linking it below, as well. Could be a great opportunity for Delta students interested in learning a bit more about journalism/writing, the career, and to try out some forms in workshops. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/community/cbc-vancouver-holds-junior-j-school-for-indigenous-students-1.5304306
Post-Secondary Updates via Ms. Fernandes:
Opening October 1st: Langara, KPU, Douglas College Most universities and colleges open their applications on October 1st - it's recommended that if you are interested in a limited-intake or limited-enrolment program at any of the above institutions (such as Nursing, Business, Engineering, some Fine Arts programs), that you apply as soon as possible on or after October 1st. It will say on the program page website whether the program is limited or whether it is open. These schools evaluate applications right away and limited-intake programs will often fill up sooner than expected so it's good to apply as soon as possible. If you are applying to Nursing at either Langara or Douglas (KPU is not open for Nursing applications), you will be applying to Academic Foundations for Potential Nursing applicants (Douglas) or Foundations in Health Studies (Langara). You cannot apply right out of high school for Bachelor of Nursing at these schools, you have to do their Foundations programs first. If you are applying to any program at Langara College (limited or open enrolment), it is also good to apply as soon as possible starting October 1st since the earlier you apply to Langara, the sooner your registration date will be for courses in the spring. As part of a delegation organized by Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), a nonprofit group that engages women worldwide in environmental advocacy, they walked the halls of Congress wearing formal Tlingit regalia instead of pantsuits and plain dresses. “We stood out that way,” explains Culp, who is part of the Tlingit people. “We couldn’t be ignored.” Our environment *needs* people like these strong women. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2019/09/trump-wants-to-log-an-enormous-alaska-forest-these-native-women-traveled-3000-miles-to-stop-it/?fbclid=IwAR1r1XHvMhbGItIGYMMR4Lr2WcX-5rZaOagRVUNvRZ1Hc21qVqv_vA2wL_M Ms. Fernandes and the career counsellor from DSS are offering a field trip to the We for She conference on October 1st for Grade 11s and 12s.

From Not Our Native Daughters FB Page (sourced Friday, Sept. 6, 2019): "The pic I got from my favorite Marine, my son, Bruce Allen. His message is - “I wear this red across my face to share a message for all indigenous. I call for the MEN of our communities to step up and “be better”, and help support indigenous women.” #MMIW #MMIR Sourced from FB, viewed Sept. 6, 2019. Gracie Post - Creative Native - 30 Day Earring Challenge · 21 August · "Day 1 pair 1. Start all over again... Not my design but got permission to use it. Delecas peyote stitched MMIW earrings. No more stolen sisters!" In June, the MMIWG Report was released. The BCTF has created a resource - Their Voices Will Guide Us - for teachers who wish to learn more and be better allies for Indigenous students and families. http://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/NIMMIWG-THEIR-VOICES-WILL-GUIDE-US.pdf Good afternoon, students and families! I look forward to working with you this year, in my continued role as the Indigenous Student Success Advocate at SDSS.
In the next couple of weeks, I'll be looking to introduce myself face-to-face with incoming Gr. 8 students and other new students, and checking in with parents/guardians/adults-at-home to make sure I have up-to-date contact information so that I am able to sent out updates that may be interesting to you and your families. My ISSA block this year is on Day 1, in C. My prep is in D, so I am able to be a bit flexible with meetings in the afternoon on Day 1. I also hope to reserve ONE Flex block every 2 weeks for Indigenous students (and their friends), so that if you have any questions or concerns, that's another way to chat with me without having to leave any of your other classes (which I know is difficult - I don't like interrupting you any more than I have to, either). In early-October, we'll do a Meet and Greet - all Indigenous students (can bring a friend) will be invited to a designated Flex block for snacks, an introduction, and so that I can hear what's important to YOU this school year. I hope that you all had a chance to relax and restore a bit this summer, and am honoured to work with you again this year. Please contact me at [email protected] or via the "Contact" link on this page. You can also leave a message at the school - (604) 943-7407 (ext. 2526)- and I will return your call as soon as I am able. Sincerely, ~Ms. Kimberley Hlina The Indigenous Education Department is planning a National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration for grades 7-12 students at Deas Island Regional Park on Tuesday, June 18 from 10 am – 2:00 p.m. Students with Indigenous ancestry are invited, and they are welcome to bring a friend. See attached for Permission Forms and more Details
